Integrating young people into society and the workforce through training for careers in energy and maintenance

Context

In Morocco, 400,000 children and young people have dropped out of school and the youth unemployment rate has reached 37.8% in urban areas.

With support from the Department of International Cooperation, the first phase of a three-year project has helped to promote the integration of young Moroccans into society and the workforce by modernising the training available for careers in the electricity industry, a sector which is creating jobs in Morocco. As a result of the project, the three partner schools are offering training programmes which include innovative aspects and lead to genuine employment prospects. Training in renewable energy has been incorporated into these programmes, as well as a competition, based on the dynamic context of COP 22 and the economic sector.

For the forthcoming period, the European Institute for Cooperation and Development would like to expand the project to include a fourth partner school, while further developing the activities carried out with its key partners in terms of refurbishing technical workshops, training trainers and the activities of guidance and employment offices. This work includes conducting a study on the paths taken by former CFA graduates, which will provide a better understanding of the challenges they face in terms of entering the workforce and enable better support to be offered.

Overall objective

Strengthen the integration of disadvantaged young people in Morocco into society and the workforce by providing training for careers in energy and maintenance.

Specific objectives

• Improve the employability of young people on the jobs market, particularly in the energy and maintenance sectors
• Build the capacity of those providing vocational and technical education so that they are able to ensure a lasting solution to the challenges involved in getting young people into the workforce

Beneficiaries

Direct beneficiaries:

• 1,000 disadvantaged students aged between 15 and 30 from schools at the three current partner training centres, and a new school to be identified
• 18 trainers at four schools
• The tutors of apprentices within companies

Indirect beneficiaries:

• All teams at the four partner schools
• The families of the students
• Trainers at the twinned schools who are empowered through their knowledge and skills
• Companies which host interns and recruit graduates
• Companies which benefit from visibility, sell their equipment, develop their employees who deliver training courses, train future recruits or potential buyers on their technology, etc.
• Those involved in providing vocational training (schools, public authorities, etc.), since the project strengthens and develops the technical sector
• Schools offering similar training programmes benefit from the development of vocational training

Anticipated outcomes 

• 1,000 young people gain access to quality training programmes (framework, equipment and trainers) in the energy or maintenance sectors
• Young people undergoing technical training receive support to enter the workforce from guidance and employment offices
• The four partner training centres, integrated into a network, are capable of sustaining, developing and implementing quality training programmes
