In response to the double emergency appeal by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in the aftermath of the disaster on 6 February, the Prince’s Government decided to offer its support to the Turkish and Syrian Red Crescent societies.
According to the IFRC, between 15 and 20 million people have been affected by the disaster in the two countries. Provisional reports suggest that there have been more than 40,000 deaths, and the United Nations believes that this figure could still double.
The earthquake occurred in the middle of a very harsh winter, where temperatures in some regions can fall below zero, further endangering already extremely vulnerable populations.
The funds allocated by the Prince’s Government are aimed at providing emergency assistance to victims being cared for by the Turkish and Syrian Red Crescent societies by supplying shelters, providing food aid and ensuring access to basic health services.
