In early July, The Principality of Monaco took part in the 43rd session of the Conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) held in Rome.
This Conference, which brings together FAO Member Nations every two years, saw the re-appointment, with massive support, of Chinese diplomat Mr Qu DONGYU as Director-General for a period of four years.
Substantive discussions focused for the first time on water resources, now a key issue in the context of climate change, and on the state of food and agriculture at the global and regional level, marked by a sharp increase in food insecurity that was accelerated by the war in Ukraine.
The Conference also unanimously approved the Organisation’s programme of Work and budget for 2024-2025.
The Conference elected 49 Member Nations in a partial renewal of the FAO Council, conducted via secret ballot to nominate members for the Europe Region. This resulted in the election of Croatia, the Netherlands and Iceland to replace the Russian Federation for the period from July 2024 to July 2027.
The Conference was followed by the 173rd session of the FAO Council, in which Monaco took part as an observer.
The Monegasque delegation comprised H.E. Ms Anne Eastwood, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Principality to the international organisations based in Rome, and diplomats from the Embassy.
