From 8th to 10th November 2023, the Monegasque Cooperation attended a meeting in Brazzaville (Congo) with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Regional Office for Africa concerning a guide on the management of sickle cell disease.
This workshop is a new phase towards the publication of a multilingual holistic guide on the management of sickle cell disease (a genetic disorder that affects 120 million people worldwide) geared towards the entire African region.
The project, known as GRAD6 and supported by the Government of Monaco, was initiated in 2013 by a network of medical experts in 6 African nations*. The important first step took place in June 2018 when an initial guide in French was officially presented to the Ministers of Health of the 6 African countries concerned.
This meeting of international experts, hosted by WHO, a key partner of Monaco in regard to public health, is acknowledgement of the work carried out by the GRAD6 network, who will have also largely contributed to the finalisation of a multilingual harmonised guide for the future benefit of all sickle cell patients across Africa.
